A School Goes Vegetarian

트로피이미지

The Active Learning Elementary School in New York City is the first public school in the United States to serve only vegetarian meals to its students. The school went through a tough transition, but it is now thriving as a model for other schools in the district.

The school first removed chocolate milk from its lunch menu, as suggested by a 3rd grader. Then, it decided to make additional changes to practice healthful eating in earnest. The decision was first approved by the school’s principal Bob Groff. He believes that there is a strong correlation between students’ wellness and their academic performances. According to school officials, both attendance rates and test scores of students have actually increased since they began eating vegetarian meals.

Public schools in other states seem to be slowly catching up as well. Some elementary schools in San Diego have adopted “Meatless Monday.” On these days, students are provided plant-based meals. The country is expecting a continuous shift in schools toward more healthful eating.
